Early Church Creeds
The Apostles’ Creed
The Apostles’ Creed is one of the earliest and most foundational statements of the Christian faith. Traditionally attributed to the teachings of the apostles, this creed succinctly outlines the core doctrines of Christianity, including the Trinity, the incarnation, the crucifixion, and the resurrection of Christ. It serves as a unifying confession for believers across denominational lines and is often used in baptismal and liturgical settings. By affirming the Apostles’ Creed, we at Church of the King declare our continuity with the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 3) and our allegiance to the God of the Bible.
The Nicene Creed
The Nicene Creed was formulated at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325 and later expanded at the Council of Constantinople in AD 381. This creed was crafted to defend the biblical doctrine of Christ’s divinity against heresies, such as Arianism, which denied that Jesus is fully God. It provides a detailed affirmation of the Trinity, the person and work of Christ, and the Holy Spirit’s role in the Church. At Church of the King, we affirm the Nicene Creed as a faithful articulation of Scripture’s teaching on the nature of God, underscoring our commitment to historic orthodoxy.
The Athanasian Creed
The Athanasian Creed, attributed to Athanasius or his theological influence, is a profound exposition of Trinitarian theology and Christology. Written in the early centuries of the Church, it emphasizes the equality and unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit while also affirming the full humanity and divinity of Christ. Though less familiar than the other two creeds, it is vital for guarding against distortions of biblical doctrine. Church of the King affirms the Athanasian Creed as an essential witness to the mystery and majesty of the Triune God.
Why These Creeds Matter
The Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds are not mere historical relics; they are enduring summaries of the faith that Christians have confessed throughout the centuries. They provide clarity on essential doctrines, act as safeguards against heresy, and unite believers across time and space in a shared confession of truth. By affirming these creeds, we humbly submit to the wisdom of the historic Church, recognizing that we stand on the shoulders of faithful men and women who preserved the gospel for us.
At Church of the King, we hold these creeds not as replacements for Scripture but as faithful reflections of its teaching. They guide us in worship, instruct us in doctrine, and connect us to the broader body of Christ. In affirming these creeds, we proclaim that we are part of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, committed to the glory of the Triune God and the proclamation of His eternal gospel.
