The Westminster Confession of Faith

The Westminster Confession of Faith, completed in 1647, is one of the most thorough and influential summaries of Reformed theology. Written by the Westminster Assembly in England, it systematically presents the doctrines of Scripture, God, salvation, the Church, and the Christian life. Its robust articulation of God’s sovereignty, covenant theology, and the means of grace provides a firm foundation for understanding the Christian faith. At Church of the King, we affirm the Westminster Confession of Faith as a faithful and rich expression of biblical truth, guiding us in life and doctrine.

The Larger Catechism

The Westminster Larger Catechism was developed alongside the Confession to provide a detailed explanation of Christian doctrine. Its expansive format allows for in-depth exploration of topics such as the nature of God, the work of Christ, the Ten Commandments, and the Lord’s Prayer. Designed for teaching and preaching, the Larger Catechism equips believers to grow in their understanding of God’s Word and their obedience to it. Church of the King values the Larger Catechism as a profound resource for catechesis and theological reflection.

The Shorter Catechism

The Westminster Shorter Catechism is a concise and accessible summary of Christian doctrine, created to teach the faith to children and those new to Christianity. Its famous opening question, “What is the chief end of man?”—answered with “To glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever”—captures the heart of Reformed theology. With 107 questions and answers, it succinctly covers key doctrines such as creation, sin, redemption, and sanctification. At Church of the King, we use the Shorter Catechism as a vital tool for teaching and discipling all ages in the faith.

Why These Standards Matter

The Westminster Standards—the Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism, and the Shorter Catechism—are a comprehensive and harmonious exposition of the Reformed understanding of Scripture. Together, they serve as a rich theological guide for worship, discipleship, and daily living. They provide clarity on essential doctrines, equip believers to defend their faith, and foster unity within the Church.

At Church of the King, we uphold the Westminster Standards as subordinate to Scripture yet faithful to its teaching. By affirming these documents, we stand within the historic Reformed tradition, committed to the glory of God, the authority of His Word, and the edification of His people. They are a treasure that helps us grow in grace and truth, inspiring us to live faithfully as disciples of Jesus Christ.
