Text: Luke

In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus presents a sobering picture of eternal realities. The contrast between the two men could not be more striking. One lives in luxury and self-indulgence, the other in suffering and neglect. But death reverses their situations entirely—Lazarus is comforted in Abraham’s bosom, while the rich man is tormented in Hades.

1. Earthly Wealth Does Not Equal Divine Favor

The rich man was not condemned for his wealth, but for his hardness of heart. He ignored the suffering of Lazarus at his gate and lived as if this world were all that mattered. His life lacked repentance, mercy, and obedience to God’s commands.

2. Hell Is Real—and Final

Jesus teaches that there is a fixed chasm after death—no one can cross from torment to comfort. The decisions made in this life echo into eternity. There is no second chance beyond the grave.

3. God’s Word Is Sufficient

The rich man pleads for someone to return from the dead to warn his brothers. But Abraham responds that they already have Moses and the Prophets. If they will not listen to Scripture, even a resurrection will not convince them. God’s Word is enough to bring repentance and faith.

Conclusion:
Luke 16:19–31 is a call to repentance, compassion, and seriousness about eternal things. Do not wait for a sign—God has already spoken. Listen to His Word, turn to Christ, and take hold of the life that truly matters.
